Begun Diye Lote Machh

This Begun Diye Lote Machh or loittya machh is a dear recipe to me handed over by my mother in law. She was an avid cook for all kind of fish. I came across loitya machh after my marriage, when she introduced me to this delicacy. She tought me to cook this fish and gave me step by step instructions to reach her standard. Till date, whenever I cook this, I fondly remember her. By the way, Lote or Loitya is Bombay Duck as you call it and widely used in Mumbai. The famous Bombil Rava Fry is a regular in my house as a snack item. I also have a Fresh Bombay Duck Fry recipe in my blog which is different from rava fry. Please do try and let me know if you like this recipe.

  • Green chili – 8-10

  • Salt, turmeric – as required
  • Garlic cloves – 1 tbsp
  • Mustard oil for cooking

How to make Begun Diye Lote Machh

Wash the fish pieces and pat dry.

Peel the jackfruit seeds and cut them into half.

In a pan, take fish, onion, garlic paste, chopped tomato, chopped chili and brinjal.

Sprinkle salt, turmeric and pour some mustard oil. Mix well and then put it on heat.

In no time, the fish will start releasing water. Stir once or twice and let it get cooked of its own. Keep the heat on the medium side.

Add the jackfruit seeds and mix . Continue cooking. The water will be evaporated completely.

Once you are seeing the water reduced by hapf, add garlic cloves. This is purely optional though. I like the garlic bite in this recipe and hence added it.

Keep cooking till evwrything becomes a mash.

You are almost done. I checked the seasoning at this stage and added some salt and fre more green chilies.

At the end, add 1 spoonful of mustard oil and remove from heat.

Serve with steamed rice.
