A very basic Pomfret Machher Jhol is here for the people who have just started their life without families around. Few days back, I was teaching my son how to cook machher jhol and it got me that I donot have a simple machher jhol in my blog for long time. Hence decided to cook this dish and documenting it. Though for Pomfret, I have plenty of recipes in my blog. Be it a Chutney Masala Pomfret | Pomfret fish in a tangy masala or some Sorshe Pomfret or Pomfret fish in mustard gravy or some Kerala Pomfret Curry aka Fish Molee, this fish can be cooked in various ways. However, for a basic recipe, please refer to this and I am sure you would love it.

How to make Pomfret Machher Jhol
Marinate the fish with salt and turmeric. Fry them till golden brown and keep aside. Heat mustard oil in a pan and add green chili and kalonji seeds or kalo jire into it. Once it emits aroma, add chopped onion and fry till golden brown.
Mix salt, turmeric, cumin powder in a cup. Make a paste by adding 2 tbsp of water. I try to make this masala water in advance and then add it to the pan once the onion has been fried nicely. Fry till oil starts coming out of the masala.
Add two cups of hot water and boil it.
Once the gravy starts boiling, carefully add the fried fishes to the pan. Stir and cook for 5 minutes.
Flip the fishes and then again cook for 3 minutes. Adjust the seasoning.
You may add few coriander leaves at this stage. I didn’t add since I didn’t have any.
Serve with plain rice.
