Chingri diye Kachkolar Khosa Bata

As I mentioned previously, we bengalis hardly throw away any part of the most of the vegetables. So here I am presenting the bharta of humble raw banana peel, to which I have added few prawns and it has taken the taste quotient up by atleast 3 notches. Just few spoonful of this Chingri diye Kachkolar Khosa Bata with a drizzle of pungent raw mustard oil and you can finish a plateful of plain rice.

While making the Chal diye Kachkolar Torkari, I have preserved the boiled raw banana peels. Then I mashed it and fried it with some spices. At the end, I have just thrown some fried prawns. You may make it completely vegetarian and I am sure you will like that version too. I am told that this dish is full of vitamins, minerals etc, but I like it the way it tastes.

Ingredients for Chingri diye Kachkolar Khosa Bata

  • Raw Banana Peel – from 4 bananas
  • Small Prawns – 2 tbsp
  • Onion – 1 , chopped
  • Nigella seeds or kalo jire – 1/2 tsp
  • Dry red chili – 1
  • Garlic paste – 1 tbsp
  • Salt and turmeric – as required
  • Sugar – 1/2 tsp – to balance the taste
  • Green chili – 5-6 or more
  • Mustard oil for cooking

How to make Chingri diye Kachkolar Khosa Bata

Pressure cook the raw banana till soft.

Peel them and preserve the skin.

In a mixer grinder, grind the peel with some green chili.

Heat mustard oil in a pan. I have used dry red chili and nigella seeds for tempering the oil.

Next add 1 tbsp of garlic paste. Fry over low heat till it is fragrant.

Then add the chopped onion and fry a little. Transfer the ground banana peel to the pan.

Mix well with the masala and cook for 2 minutes. This will ensure that the water, if any gets evaporated. Now sprinkle some salt, turmeric and sugar. Mix again.

Cook patiently over low heat stirring here and there for atleast 10 minutes. By that time, the peels will change colors and become a mash. Add the fried prawns at this stage. Cook for 3-4 minutes.

Adjust the seasoning. Finally add a spoonful of mustard oil and remove from heat. You may add some more green chili if you like it hot. Serve hot with plain rice.
