Cooked Aar machh after ages though it is one of our favorite fish. The usual recipe of Aar machh is the one cooked with some onion and garlic and it is kind of a steamed dish. For a spicier variety, and if you like to have it as a starter, you can try this recipe too.
However, while deciding on the menu the other day, I have selected this Aar Machher Tel Jhal recipe. It has it;s unique combination of masala which goes best with some plain rice. We relished it really well during our weekend lunch.
Ingredients for Aar Machher Tel Jhal
- Aar fish – 7-8 pieces
- Tomato – 2
- Ginger – 2 inch piece
- Green chili – 6
- Mustard paste – 2 tbsp
- Salt and turmeric – as required
- Kashmiri chili powder – 1 tsp
- Mustard oil for cooking
How to make Aar Machher Tel Jhal
Marinate the fish with some salt and turmeric. Then fry them in mustard oil till it turns brown from all sides. Keep aside.
While the fish is getting fried, make a paste of tomato, ginger and green chili.
Once the fishes are fried well, add some more oil to the pan. Then add the masala paste prepared earlier. Fry for 2 minutes. Then add salt, turmeric and kashmiri chili powder. Fry till oil separates.
Add the mustard paste and fry for 2 more minutes. Then add 2 cups of hot water.
When the water starts bubbling, return back the fried fishes to the pan. Stir and cook for 10 minutes.
Adjust the seasoning. Once the fishes are cooked thoroughly, pour a tsp of mustard oil to the pan and switch off the heat.
Add some green chili and keep covered for 10 minutes.
Serve hot with plain rice.
