Chhana o Kachkola r Kopta

Made this lovely Chhana o Kachkola r Kopta by chance. I was planning to cook kachkolar kopta and have boiled green banana and potato for that. Just before making the kopta, I found some home made paneer or cottage cheese in the fridge and mixed it with mashed banana in equal quantity. The result is this mouth watering kopta dish that we loved . I have added onion and garlic paste while making the gravy. You may make it pure vegetarian by omitting the onion garlic.

How to make Chhana o Kachkola r Kopta

Cut the green banana into pieces and peel it. Don’t throw away the peel. You can make fabulous bharta with this. Peel the potatoes. One would be boiled along with green banana. Cube the other one. Pressure cook the green banana and 1 potato. Mash them thoroughly.

Mix equal amount of banana and cottage cheese. Now add salt, sugar, red chili powder, 1 tsp cumin powder and turmeric powder. Add 2 tbsp of Besan also. Mix them using your palm.

Take out small amount from the dough and put a raisin at the centre. Make small ball and keep aside. Do it for all.

Heat oil in a frying pan. Coat each ball with rice powder in a thin layer and place it onto the oil. Fry till golden brown from all sides. Keep aside. Do it in batches.

To make the gravy, heat 1 tbsp of oil in a pan and add bayleaf, cumin seeds and fenugreek seeds.

Next goes chopped onion, garlic paste and chopped tomato. Fry well till tomato is mashed.

Add salt, turmeric, kashmiri chili powder, cumin powder and coriander powder. Sprinkle some water and fry the masala. Fry till the oil starts coming out of the masala. Add cubed potato and fry for 3 minutes.

Next add 2 cups of water and bring it to a boil. Kopta will soak a lot of water so, adjust the water accordingly.

When the potatoes are almost cooked, release the kopta onto the pan and stir carefully.

Boil for 1 or 2 minutes and remove from heat. Check the seasoning and add the sugar. Sprinkle some garam masala powder too.

Keep for a standing time of 30 minutes and then serve.
