Cabbage and Prawn Bharta

Read somewhere that this dish is also known as badhacopi r koura, though I am not sure. I will do some research on this and may be will update the post accordingly. Till that time, let me call it a Cabbage and Prawn Bharta. As I keep saying, we bangals hardly throw away any part of the most of the vegetables like parwal, prawn head or ridgegourd. Cabbage is not an exception either. Made this with the outer leaves of the cabbage and some leftover prawns and it was yummy. I have added some mustard paste as well to give it an extra tang. Just have it with plain rice after drizzling some mustard oil.

Cabbage and Prawn Bharta

Ingredients for Cabbage and Prawn Bharta

  • Cabbage – half head / outer leaves
  • Prawn – 100 gms
  • Mustard paste – 1 tbsp
  • Green chili – 3-4
  • nigella seeds or kalo jire or kalonji seeds. – 1/2 tsp
  • Bayleaf – 1
  • Salt and turmeric – as required
  • Coconut pieces – 1 tbsp – optional
  • Mustard oil for cooking

How to make Cabbage and Prawn Bharta

Chop the cabbage leaves roughly . Then grind them to a paste.

I have added 2 green chili while grinding the cabbage.

Do it in batches if required. Sprinkle some salt at the top.

In a pan, heat mustard oil and fry the small prawns with a pinch of salt and turmeric. Donot overfry them.

In the same pan, add some more mustard oil if required and then add the bayleaf, green chili and kalo jire to it.

Add ground cabbage and sprinkle some turmeric.

Continue frying with the lid on over low heat till the vegetable is cooked through. Remove the lid and add the mustard paste. Mix well.

Cook for 5 more minutes till the oil starts coming out of the vegetable. Sprinkle coconut bits, if using. Mix well.

Then it is time to add the fried prawns. Stir and cook for 5 more minutes.

Adjust the seasoning and remove from heat. Pour 1 spoon of mustard oil at the end.

Serve with plain rice.
