Chingri diye Badhacopi Ghonto | Cabbage Curry with Prawns

I must admit, I like to cook Cabbage since it is a vegetable which I can cook in various ways. We bengalis like it add some non-veg element to it. For example I once cooked it with some mutton liver when a dear friend visited my house. The famous machher matha diye badha copi or cabbage cooked with fish head is also quite regular at my home. Of course, we have the vegetable version of badhacopi ghonto as well. where the show stopper is the green peas. This time I cooked another popular version of cabbage curry and that is Chingri diye Badhacopi Ghonto or cabbage cooked with prawn.

Ingredients for Chingri diye Badhacopi Ghonto

  • Cabbage – 1
  • Potato – 2
  • Small Prawn – 200 gm
  • Onion – 1, chopped
  • Bayleaf – 2
  • Panch foron or bengali 5 spice – 1/2 tsp
  • Green chili – 4
  • Ginger paste – 1 tbsp
  • Tomato – 2, chopped
  • Cumin powder – 1 tbsp
  • Coriande rpowder – 1 tsp
  • Salt, Turmeric – as required
  • Red chili powder – 1 tsp
  • Ghee – 1 tsp
  • Sugar – 1 tsp
  • Garam Masala powder – 1/2 tsp
  • White oil for cooking

How to make Chingri diye Badhacopi Ghonto

Peel and cut the potato into cubes. Shred the cabbage as thin as possible. Fry the potato cubes till golden brown. Keep aside.

In the same oil lightly fry the prawns with a pinch of salt and turmeric. Keep aside along with residual oil, if any.

Heat some more oil in the same pan. Then add bayleaf, panch foron and green chili.

When tempering is done, add the chopped onion and ginger paste. Add a pinch of salt and fry the masala for 2 minutes.

Now is the time to add chopped tomato at this stage and fry till the tomato is mashed.

Add all the powdered masala at this stage. With a sprinkle of water, fry them well till the masala is well incorporated into onion tomato mash.

Add half cup of water and fry the masala.

Now add the shredded cabbage and mix well with the masala. Keep covered and cook over low heat for 20 minutes. Cabbage will release water and the vegetable will get cooked of its own water.

When cabbage is almost cooked, add the fried potatoes and mix well.

Cook over high heat till cabbage is cooked and potatoes are well incorporated.

Now is the time to check whether the water is evaporated and potatoes are cooked through, add the fried prawns.

Cook for 5 more minutes, and add sugar and required salt at this stage. Mix well.

When the dish is ready, add spoonful of ghee. Sprinkle some garam maslaa powder also.

Your dish is ready now. This is ideal to enjoy with rice or roti.
