Ingredients for Musoor dal bharta

  • Masoor dal or musoor dal or red lentil – 1 cup
  • Onion – 1, chopped
  • Garlic – few pods
  • Tomato – 1, chopped
  • Salt, Turmeric
  • Green chili
  • Mustard oil
  • Dry red chili – 1
  • Kalonji seeds / Kalo jire – a pinch

How to make Musoor dal bharta

Wash and boil the dal in a pan with one cup of water. I have added the garlic pod and some turmeric while boiling the dal. I didn’t add the salt when boiling. Make sure you are not disturbing the dal while boiling, if you do so, it will not be soft evenly.

When dal is cooked, keep aside.

In the same pan, add some mustard oil and when it is hot, fry the dry red chili. Keep aside. Now add the kalonji seeds followed by chopped onion. Fry till golden brown.

Add the cooked dal and mix well. Add salt at this point.

Now, you need to put the chopped tomato into the dal.

Mix and cook till the tomato is mashed and well incorporated to the dal. Adjust the seasoning.

Remove from heat, break the fried dry red chili into pieces and add it to the dal. Add some green chili too. Finally pour one more spoonful of mustard oil and serve with plain rice.
