I don’t know about the english name of gule fish. it looks like eel fish, and is amazingly tasty when cooked in a bengali way. It is a bit rare as well, and for us bengalis, we believe that it very healthy and increases blood. Not sure about the blood thing though, but we like it for its taste.
Last week, when I saw them while in the fish market, bought some immediately and made this simple Gule machher jhal. Cooked it in a kalojire / dhonebata or kalonji seeds / coriander seed gravy with few slices of potato. Instead of coriander powder, I have soaked the coriander seeds along with nigella seeds and then grind it to a paste before cooking. It tastes quite different when I cook it with coriander powder. Obviously, we had with rice.
Ingredients used for Gule machher jhal
- Gule machh – 300 gm
- Potato – 1, thinly sliced
- Nigella seeds – 1 tsp
- Coriander seeds – 1 tbsp
- Green chili – 5-6
- Salt, Turmeric, kashmiri chili powder – as required
- Mustard oil for cooking
- Coriander leaves for garnishing
How to make Gule machher jhal
To make the masala, I have soaked the coriander seeds and nigella seeds in water for 30 minutes.
While the masala is getting soaked, add some salt and turmeric to the fishes and keep aside for 30 minutes.
In a pan, heat some mustard oil and then fry the potato slices till golden brown. Remove from pan and keep aside.
Add the marinated fish carefully into the oil and fry till golden. Do it in batches till all the fishes are cooked.
Grind the soaked masala along with few green chili in a mixer grinder.
This is how my fried fishes look like.
In the pan, add some more oil if required . Add nigella seeds when the oil is hot and then add the masala paste made in the previous step. Add some salt, turmeric and kashmiri chili powder as well and fry till oil starts coming out of the masala. I have sprinkled some water as well to avoid the burning while frying the masala.
Now add the fried potato slices and mix well with the masala.
Add a cup of hot water now and let it boil.
Add the fried fish pieces now to the pan and mix lightly.
Let it boil for 3-5 minutes over medium heat. Adjust the seasoning and add chopped coriander leaves just before removing from heat.
Serve Gule machher jhal with plain rice.
