Gathi Kochu r chingri Bharta

This Gathi Kochu r chingri Bharta or taro root shrimp bharta is a lip smacking item from my kitchen to yours. I already have few other taro root recipe in my blog. I even have one kachu chingri recipe where the main ingredients are same as this, but cooking method is different and this time I made it in bharta style. My friends already knew my love for bharta.

Preparation of this bharta dish has been done accidentally. I was steaming my taro roots for some curry recipe, but forgot to switch off the pressure cooker on time and as a result, the taro roots become very soft and was not in proper shape to make a curry. Hence I have decided to make a bharta out of it and it was heavenly.

Gathi Kochu r chingri Bharta

Ingredients for Gathi Kochu r chingri Bharta

  • gathi kochu or taro root – 8
  • Prawns – 100 gm
  • Garlic paste – 2 tsp
  • Dried red chili – 2
  • Kalo jire or nigella seeds – 1/2 tsp
  • Salt, turmeric – as required
  • Green chili – as per taste
  • Sugar – a pinch
  • Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp
  • Mustard oil

How to make Gathi Kochu r chingri Bharta

Peel and boil the taro roots. Discard the water and then mash them in a mixer grinder.

I have added the garlic and mustard seeds while grinding the taro root. You can grind them separately and then mix it.

Fry the prawns lightly with a pinch of salt and turmeric. Keep aside.

In the same oil, add the kalo jire or nigella seeds and the dry red chili. Let it splutter.

Add ground taro root into the pan. Mix well.

Add salt, turmeric, sugar and chopped green chili. I have also added few raisins into the pan. Now cook over medium to low heat till the water evaporates and the mash is coming out of the pan.

At this point, add the fried prawns and mix well.

Your Gathi Kochu r chingri Bharta is ready to be served. Adjust the seasoning and you are done.

I have added some more chilies.

Serve with rice.
