Sometimes, when I am completely alone at home, I enjoy the calmness , the silence, the non-hurried life, sitting here and there, reading something, listening to good music, taking a really long shower and relaxing.
On those days, I prepare myself the simplest of food, some rice and one side, and mostly it is some boiled dal or lentil. We call it dal bhate, boiling the soaked dal along with rice in a separate container and then adding some mustard oil and salt and some green chilies, enough for survival.
This Matar Dal Bhate or matar dal bharta was used to be made by my grandma long long ago. She never used onion in this dish, but I have added some and it tasted great.
Ingredients for Matar Dal Bhate or matar dal bharta
- Matar Dal or yellow split peas – 1 cup
- Onion – 1, chopped fine
- Mustard oil – 2-3 tbsp
- Grated Coconut – 2 tbsp
- Green chili – as per taste
- Salt – as per taste
How to make Matar Dal Bhate or matar dal bharta
Soak the matar dal over night. If you are in a hurry, you may soak the dal in hot water for atleast an hour or so.
Discard the water and then grind the dal in a mixer grinder with as little water as possible.
I have placed the ground dal into a strainer for further straining the water.
The word ‘Bhate’ literally mean to cook the dish ( matar dal in this case) along with rice. Since our rice intake is very low, I have steamed the ground dal in microwave. For that I have taken the ground dal in a bowl and placed the bowl on a big flat bowl where I have put some hot rice water. I have cooked in this way for some 5-7 minutes on full power.
Let it be inside microwave till it is completely cooled down. Remove from microwave, discard the liquid. Now mash the steamed dal a bit. Add salt, chopped green chili, chopped onion. Mix well.
Add some mustard oil and give it a good rub.
Finally add the coconut. Mix lightly. Adjust the seasoning.
Pour one more spoon of mustard oil and serve with plain rice and a green chili.
I love matar dal in any form, and here are some of my other recipes containing matar dal.
