Subho Maha Shoshti 2021 friends! On this auspicious day of Maha Shoshti, let us pray to Goddess Durga to give us strength and help us celebrate the triumph of good over evil. Being born as a Bengali, we celebrate Durgapuja in full vigor, though the pandemic has taken its toll, but still it could not damp the spirit. We may not be doing the pandal hopping as we used to do before, but we are enjoying good food, good company, chitchat and relaxing with family and friends.
For the lunch, I have prepared this Doi Bhetki. Came out really nice and delicious, and give us the feel if festivities all around. So here I am presenting the recipe for my October marathon again.
Ingredients for Doi Bhetki
- Bhetki fish – 8 pieces
- Onion – 1 big
- Chopped Garlic – 1 tbsp
- Green chili – 2
- Whole garam masala
- Kishmish or raisin – 1 tbsp
- Coriander powder – 2 tsp
- Kashmiri chili powder – 1 tsp
- Cumin powder – 1/2 tsp
- Curd – 2 tbsp
- Cumin Seeds, Fenugreek seeds for tempering
- Bayleaf , Dry red chili – 1
- Salt, turmeric – a pinch
- White oil and Ghee – 2:1
How to make Doi Bhetki
Wash and clean the fish and then fry them lightly with a pinch of salt and turmeric. Keep aside. Make a paste of curd, onion, garlic and green chili.
Heat a pan and add white oil and ghee in the ratio of 2:1. When it is hot, add bayleaf, dry red chili, cumin seeds and fenugreek seeds. Let it splutter. Then add the whole garam masala. Wait till it starts releasing aroma.
Add the masala paste along with curd to the oil. Fry a bit and then add the kashmiri chili powder, salt, cumin powder and coriander powder.
Fry till the masalas are well blended and oil starts coming out of the masala.
Add the fried fish pieces and mix well. Add a cup of hot water at this stage.
Boil for 5-7 minutes till the fishes get cooked. Adjust the seasoning. Remove from heat and add some green chili. Cover it for some time to infuse the smell of green chili to the gravy.
Serve hot with pulao or rice.
