Kakra r Jhal-Spicy Crab curry

Kakra r jhal is something to relish on a lazy Sunday afternoon lunch. You know the reason, right !! It takes time to cook, cleaning, frying, preparation of masala, frying the masala till it reaches the right consistency and finally dunking the crab in the masala. Adjust some seasoning here and there, and then serve with hot rice. Eating a crab is also an art, enjoying every bit of it. For all these, you need ample time , right !!

I cook my crabs in various ways, and this recipe is so very bengali, ideal to be a part of this festive season.

presenting this as my 3rd entry to the october21 blog marathon.

  • green chili – as per tolerance
  • garam masala powder
  • Bayleaf, dry red chili
  • Cumin seeds – a pinch
  • Mustard oil for cooking

How to cook Kakra r Jhal

1st step is to clean the crab. While my fish monger has cleaned it and broke the claws , I had to clean it at home as well. All my crabs were female crabs, (they taste sweeter), and full of gheelu o rbrain as we call it. So I carefully remove those orange color substance from the shell and keep it in a bowl. Then I have cleaned the crab along with shells thoroughly so that all dirts are removed.

Next I marinate the crab pieces and claws in some salt and turmeric. I keep it this way atleast for 15-20 minutes.

In a kadai, heat some mustard oil. Fry the marinated crab till it changed color. Remove from heat.

In the same oil, fry the potato cubed till golden brown, However, addition of potato is completely optional.

Heat some more oil and then add bayleaf , cumin seeds and one dry red chili.

Add chopped onion and fry well with a sprinkle of salt.

When the onions turn brown, add the ginger garlic paste Cook till the raw smell is gone.

Add turmeric and red chili powder with a sprinkle of water. Let the masalas be fried well.

Now is the time to add the tomatoes. Mix the tomatoes with masala and fry over low to medium heat till the tomatoes are mashed and mix well with masala.

Add 2 cups of hot water and stir. Add the fried potatoes at this stage.

Once the water starts boiling, add the fried crabs along with the ghilu or brain. Stir and cook it till the potatoes are done,

Adjust the gravy for seasoning. Once the gravy thickens, add few green chili, if you like it. Mine was already hot so I have avoided it.

Sprinkle the kashmiri red chili powder at the end. This step will give you a lovely red color to your dish.

Sprinkle the garam masala powder at the end.

Serve with hote rice.
