Made this Matar Dal er Muithya last weekend after getting bored of cooking the same old dal bhat machher jhol or typical Bengali rice, dal, fish curry combo. To talk about Matar dal, I was not very fond of this legume since my childhood. Not sure about the actual reason, just not liked it in the form of dal. But few days back, I have tried Matar dal with pui shak or malabar spinach and I liked it. Now the next venture is this ‘Muithya’ . I am not sure whether I will be able to explain what a Muithya is, but let me try. Matar dal is soaked in water overnight, then grind it with minimum water and take it in your fist ( Mutho) and release it in the boiling water so that it is hardened and gets cooked. Then you make a gravy as per your choice. I made it the bengali vegetarian way that is without onion and garlic. I have also added some cubed potatoes to it. The output is finger licking good which we have relished with a plateful of plain rice.

How to make Matar Dal er Muithya
I have soaked the matar dal overnight in water after washing. Then I grind it in a mixer grinder with as little water as possible. Then I have mixed some salt, turmeric ( very little), a pinch of sugar to the batter.
In a pan, I have boiled some water and then using my palm, took some batter and release it in the water. Let it boil for 5 minutes, then strain it from the water and keep aside. Do it for all your batter.
In a pan, heat oil and then fry the muithya till golden brown. Keep aside.
In the same pan, add cubed potato and fry till it is almost cooked. Keep aside.
Make a masala paste. For this, take salt, turmeric, chili powder, ginger paste , coriander powder, cumin powder and add a small amount of water to make a paste.
In the same pan, add some more oil. When it is hot, add the bay leaf and whole garam masala and then add the tomato. Fry it till the tomato is mashed. Now add the masala paste and continue cooking till the masala is fried and oil starts coming out of the masala.
Add desiccated coconut and fry well.
Then add a cup of water. Your muithya will soak considerable water so add it accordingly.
add the potato and cook for some time till the potatoes are well done. Next add the Muithya and give it a boil. Adjust the seasoning.
Finally add few green chili and you are done. You may add a spoonful of ghee at the end as per your liking.
Serve hot with plain rice.
