Bhapa Bhetki – I had some fresh bhetki cubes sitting in my fridge for some time now. I was planning to make some bhetki paturi with this but instead of a banana leaf wrap, I was thinking of wrapping it in some bottlegourd or pumpkin leaf . Hubby couldn’t find the fresh leaf in the market, may be it is because of the weather. So changed my plan and made this bhapa bhetki in microwave. I had a similar dish made before using prawn, the process is almost similar and only difference is cooking time. While prawn is cooked for just few minutes, bhetki took much time. The result is finger licking good. So much so that hubby put it in tbelist for the next weekly grocery shopping .
let us jump into the recipe now.
Ingredients for Bhapa Bhetki
- Bhetki fish fillets ( thick) – 300 gms
- Mustard seeds – 1 tbsp
- Poppy Seeds – 1 tbsp
- Fresh coconut – 1 heaped tbsp
- Curd – 1 tbso
- Green chilli – as per taste
- Salt, Turmeric, vinegar – 1 tbsp
- Mustard oil
How to make Bhapa Bhetki
Soak the bhetki fillets in salt and vinegar mixture for 30 minutes.
While the fish is taking its salt bath, make the masala paste. For the masala, I have soaked the mustard and poppy seed for 30 minutes. Then I grind it to fine paste with a pinch of salt and four green chillis. You may adjust the chilli as per your taste though. Once the mustard and poppy seed is ground well, add desiccated coconut and blitz the grinder again.
Next add the curd and mix well.
Take the masala mixture in a microwave safe bowl and add turmeric, 2 tbsp mustard oil and mix well. Adjust the salt.
Add the fish cubes after rinsing them in water. Massage the fish pieces with the masala and keep covered for 30 minutes.
When it is time to cook, add half cup of water to the bowl. Stir well so that the fish pieces are submerged in masala water.
Pour few drops of mustard oil and put it in microwave.
I have run my microwave on full power for 5 minutes.
After 5 minutes, I stir the mixture once and then again put it in the microwave for 5 more minutes. The fish is almost done, however, at this stage I have run the microwave for 3 more minutes. The bowl should be covered always.
This is the stage when you know that your bhapa bhetki is ready.
Serve with plain rice.
