Mom in law requested for some bhapa chingri or steamed prawn during her recent visit and how can I not fulfill her wish specially when I remember the way she took care of me during my early days of marriage. That was the time when I got my first job too and it was a long commute to reach office from my home. Mom in law used to cook for me and feed me nutritious meal when I was getting prepared for the office. To cut the story short, I happily obliged and cooked this bhapa chingri or steamed prawn in microwave. It gave me immense pleasure to see her relish the dish with rice.
- Tiger prawn , medium size – 12-14
- Coconut – half, scraped
- Mustard powder- 1 heaped tbsp, soak in water and a pinch of salt
- Curd – 1 tbsp
- Green chilli – 5-6
- Salt, turmeric,
- Mustard oil
- Sugar – a pinch ( optional)
Wash and clean the prawn, remove shell and devein. Marinate with some salt and turmeric for 15 minutes.
Make a paste of scraped coconut, soaked mustard powder, curd, green chilli, salt, turmeric and sugar (optional).
Fry the marinated prawns very lightly in mustard oil and cool it a bit.
Add the paste along with 1 tbsp mustard oil to the fried prawns and give it a good but light atir so that the prawns are well coated with masala. Keep aside for 30 minutes.
You may add half cup of water to the mixture.
Cover and cook on micro mode at 720 power for 10-14 minutes. Give it a stir after 5-6 minutes.
When ready to cook, put the mixture in a microwave safe bowl with lid. Add some more mustard oil at the top and add 2 slitted green chilli.
Keep for a standing time for 15 minutes. Serve with plain rice.
