I am becoming obsessed with non veg khichuri it seems and this prawn khichuri is the new kid in the block. Last week it was raining heavily in my part of the city and what better way to enjoy monsoon , right !! So cooked the prawns with some coconut milk, boiled the rice and dal with some masalas in a pressure cooker and then mixed these two with some more masalas and at the end pour a tablespoon of ghee and garam masala powder to make a really hearty meal. Monsoon dinner sorted.
- Basmati rice – 1 cup
- Musur dal/ red lentils- 3/4 cup
- Prawns – 200 gm, shelled and cleaned
- Coconut milk – 1 cup
- Salt, turmeric
- Cumin powder – 1 tsp
- Coriander powder – 1 tsp
- Red chilli powder- 1/2 tsp
- Onion – 2, chopped
- Ginger paste – 2 tsp
- Garlic paste – 1 tsp
- Tomato – 1, chopped
- Dry red chilli – 2-3
- Bayleaf – 2
- Cumin seed- a pinch
- Mustard oil, ghee
- Onion -1, sliced thinly and fried with a pinch of sugar till crispy. Also known as beresta.
Soak the rice and masoor dal in water for 15 minutes.
Fry the prawns with some salt and turmeric. Keep aside.
In a pressure cooker, add mustard oil . Add the cumin seed, bayleaf and dry red chilli and when it turns color, add half of the chopped onion.
Fry a little then add the soaked rice and dal.
Fry a little then add salt and turmeric. Add half of the ginger paste too along with cumin powder.
Fry and When the rice starts sticking to the cooker, add 2 cups of water and pressure cook for 2 whistle. Let it cool.
In a pan, add mustard oil. When it is hot, add the remaining bayleaf and dry red chilli, let it change color then add the sliced onion.
After frying a little, add the ginger garlic paste followed by salt, turmeric, chilli and coriander powder.
Fry for 1 minute then add the tomato. Fry till the tomato is mashed.
Next goes half of the coconut milk.
Mix well and when it starts boiling, add the fried prawns.
Cook for 5 minutes and then temove from heat. Adjust the seasoning and sprinkle some garam masala powder. Add the beresta too.
Put the pan back tot he oven and this time, pour the boiled rice and dal onto the prawn curry.
Give it a good stir and then add the remaining coconut milk. Mix well.
Boil for 5 minutes. Then remove from heat after adjusting the seasoning.
Pour the ghee and sprinkle garam masala powder.
Serve the delicious prawn khichuri with your favourite condiments.
