Dim aloo bharta – egg potato bharta

During our childhood, My mom was a working mom and she used to leave home around 6 am to catch the bus and reach school on time. ( she was a high school teacher) . At the same time, there was no cook at home, so she made sure to give us healthy and heavy breakfast which can be made quickly  without any active supervision. So our breakfast on most days were boiled rice without straining the starch , ( we call it fena bhat) and the ‘dim aloo bhate’ or mashed egg potato. Mom used to mash the boiled eggs and potatoes with some salt and mustard oil and a green chilli. Till date, this is a comfort food for me.

Back to today’s world, whenever I am facing shortage of time or the pure lack of interest to cook something elaborate, I take shelter of this and it is well accepted by my family too.

This time, to make Dim aloo bharta, I mashed the eggs and potatoes and mixed some other masalas to give it a twist. The winner is the lemon juice that I have added at the end and it gave a distinctive flavour to the bharta. Let me share the recipe with you.

Dim aloo bharta

Ingredients for Dim aloo bharta :

  • Eggs – 3
  • Potato – 3, medium
  • Lemon juice – 1 tsp, more, if you like it more tangy
  • Onion – 1/2, chopped finely
  • Ginger garlic paste – 1 tsp
  • Dry red chilli- 1, crushed
  • Cinnamon- 1 inch , crushed
  • Roasted Cumin and coriander powder- 1 tsp
  • Chilli powder – optional
  • Turmeric – 1/2 tsp
  • Salt, sugar a pinch
  • Garam masala powder- a pinch
  • Ghee – 1 tbsp

How to cook Dim aloo bharta :

Cut the potatoes into half and then boil with eggs till done. I always mix a pinch of salt and a tbsp of vinegar to the water while boiling eggs and potatoes.

Once the potatoes and eggs are cool, peel and mash in a bowl. Donot mash the eggs too much though.

In a pan, add the ghee. When it is hot, add crushed cinnamon, crushed red chilli and all the masalas. Fry a little till the chillis turn color.

Then add the chopped onion and fry till it changes color.

Add the ginger garlic paste and fry till the raw smell is gone.

Now add the mashed potato and egg and mix well.

Fry really well till you get the nice aroma and then remove from heat.

Adjust the seasoning. Then add the lemon juice and mix well. Sprinkle some garam masala powder and serve.
