Something healthy for a quick weeknight dinner. Had a bunch of malabar spinach or ‘puishak’ as we call it in bengali. We usually make ‘chorchori’ ( the veg version) or chyanchra (non-veg version) using it but this time while boiling dal, I put the greens into it. Weeknight dinner is sorted with rice and a boiled egg.
- Musur dal – a cup
- Malabar spinach – 2 cups, chopped
- Garlic chopped- 1 tbsp
- Salt, turmeric
- Green chilli
- Mustard oil
Wash and soak the dal for 15 minutes.
Boil the dal with a cup of water. Once it starts boiling, add salt, turmeric and slitted green chilli.
Add one more cup of water and boil till the dal is cooked. Add chopped puishak. You don’t have to boil further. Remove from heat and keep covered. Greens will be cooked because of the steam.
In another pan, heat some mustard oil. Then add chopped garlic and fry a little. We love the garlic smell in our dal and hence add a tbsp. if you like a milder flavour, add a teaspoon of chopped garlic.
Pour the dal and cook for 5 minutes over low heat. Adjust the seasoning and you are done.
Enjoy with plain rice.
