Something to savour on a hot and humid sunday when your phone says the temperature outside feels like 53 degree. I had no mood to cook elaborate meals and opened my fridge to see some patal or parwal or pointed gourd looking at me, they are to some extent dried up a bit , so decided to make bharta out of it. Also had 2 slices of ‘gandharaj lebu’ , so mixed the juice at the end to the bharta and we relished our lunch really well.
- patal or pointed gourd – 8-10
- onion – 1, chopped
- green chilli – 3 or as per taste
- kalonji seeds/ kalo jire – a pinch
- salt, sugar, mustard oil
- gandharaj lebu – 2 segments
Chop the parwals roughly with the skin on. Remove the sides.
steam the chopped parwal in microwave for 5 minutes. Keep inside microwave for 10-15 minutes more.
grind the steamed parwal in mixer with green chilli and a pinch of salt. Keep aside.
In a pan, add mustard oil. When it is hot, add the kalonji seeds and let it crackle. Then add chopped onion and fry till golden brown.
Add the blended parwal and mix. Let it cook over low flame till the water evaporates.
Add salt and sugar and give it a good stir till oil starts coming out.
Remove from heat and add the lime juice. Mix well.
Enjoy with plain rice.
